How to Lift a Block on a WhatsApp Contact

How to Lift a Block on a WhatsApp Contact

The quick route: Settings → Privacy → Blocked contacts, tap the person and choose Unblock. If the chat with them is still in your list, it's even simpler — open the conversation and tap the unblock button at the bottom of the screen.

They won't find out: WhatsApp sends no notification about a block or about it being lifted, in either direction. But some things don't come back after unblocking — more on that below.

On Android

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap the three dots in the top-right corner.
  2. Go to Settings → Privacy.
  3. Select Blocked contacts.
  4. Tap the number or name you need.
  5. On the card that opens, choose Unblock and confirm.

On iPhone

  1. Open the Settings tab in the bottom bar.
  2. Go to Privacy → Blocked.
  3. Swipe the contact's row to the left and tap Unblock. The Edit button at the top of the list does the same job.

On desktop and the web version

In WhatsApp Web and the desktop app, open settings, go to the privacy section and find the blocked contacts list. Unblocking works identically there and syncs across every linked device — no need to repeat it on your phone.

Through the chat — the fastest way

If the conversation is still in your chat list, open it: instead of the input field you'll see a line offering to unblock the contact. One tap and messaging works again.

No chat there? Then you deleted it when you blocked them. In that case the blocked list is the only route — the contact is stored there by phone number, even if you removed the name from your address book.

What happens after you unblock

What comes back:

  • the ability to message and call each other;
  • visibility of "online" and last seen, within your own privacy settings;
  • profile photo updates and Status posts — but only new ones.

What doesn't:

  • Messages sent to you during the block. They aren't held on the server waiting for you and are never delivered retroactively — those messages are gone for good.
  • Calls made while the block was active. They won't appear in your call list.
  • Status updates posted during that period. You'll only see ones published after the block was lifted.

The old conversation stays put, though: blocking doesn't erase history unless you deleted the chat yourself.

What blocking doesn't do

Knowing the limits of the feature saves a lot of frustration:

  • It doesn't apply in groups. In a shared chat a blocked person still sees your messages and you see theirs. There's no per-group block.
  • It doesn't delete the number from your contacts. After unblocking, the contact is right where it was in your address book.
  • It doesn't stop regular phone calls. The restriction only exists inside the messenger.
  • It doesn't hide you entirely. Your name and general information can still be visible through shared chats.

How to tell whether you're the one who was blocked

Sometimes people search for how to lift a block when they weren't the one who set it. There's no direct way to check — WhatsApp deliberately gives no definitive signal. The indirect signs:

  • messages send with one tick and never get a second;
  • neither the profile photo nor the last seen time is visible;
  • calls don't go through;
  • you no longer see their Status updates.

Taken one at a time, each of these is equally explained by privacy settings or a switched-off phone. Only treat a block as confirmed when all of them line up and persist. Adding the person to a group to test it is a bad idea: you'll get your answer and damage the relationship along with it.

If you're the one getting blocked regularly

Mass reports and blocks aren't only a personal-communication issue. If a number sends broadcasts, opens a lot of conversations with strangers, or pushes cold offers, WhatsApp reads those signals and may restrict the account, up to banning the number outright.

The practical takeaway for anyone dealing with clients: keep business communication separate from your personal number — on a WhatsApp Business profile or on a number set up specifically for it. When client conversations run from a separate profile, the risk doesn't spill onto your personal one; the same approach is used when several lines of work run in parallel, including with ready-made WhatsApp accounts. The rules don't change either way: don't message people without a reason, and don't send identical texts to dozens of recipients in a row.

Common mistakes

  • Looking for the contact in the main list. Blocked people don't appear among ordinary chats — open the Blocked contacts section specifically.
  • Expecting messages to "arrive late". Anything sent during the block is lost, and no amount of retrying brings it back.
  • Deleting and reinstalling the app. The block list is tied to the account and restores along with it.
  • Blocking instead of reporting. For a spammer or scammer, use Report and block — otherwise the service never learns about the violation.
  • Unblocking just to check something. You can lift and reapply a block anytime, but during that window the person has access to you again.

If unblocking doesn't work

  • Update the app — menu layouts differ slightly between versions.
  • Check you're in the right account: WhatsApp Business keeps its own block list.
  • Make sure the change was saved — on an unstable connection the setting sometimes doesn't apply.
  • If the contact disappeared from the list on its own, the block has already been lifted.

FAQ

Does the person get a notification when I unblock them?

No. They'll simply notice that messages are being delivered again and the profile is visible.

Can I unblock a number that isn't in my contacts?

Yes. The blocked list stores it by phone number, and unblocking works exactly the same.

Does the chat history survive unblocking?

Yes, unless you deleted the chat. The history stays intact and new messages continue it.

Can I block someone again right after unblocking?

Yes, there are no limits on how often you switch it.

Can a blocked contact see my "online" status?

Not while the block is active. Once it's lifted, visibility follows your privacy settings again.

What if the person calls from another number?

Block that one too, and for persistent contact use the report option — it sends the sender's recent messages to WhatsApp for review.

Does blocking affect shared groups?

No. Inside group chats you'll keep seeing each other's messages — blocking only covers private chats and calls.

In short

Lifting a block takes seconds: the Blocked contacts section in privacy settings, or the button right in the chat. Nobody gets notified, the old conversation stays where it was, but everything sent or called during the block is unrecoverable. And if you suspect you're the one who was blocked, judge by the combination of signs rather than a single grey tick.
