How to Turn Off the "Online" Status in WhatsApp

Open Settings → Privacy → Last seen and online. In the first option choose who can see your last seen, and in the second switch to Same as last seen. After that, the green "online" label stops appearing for everyone you've hidden it from.

One detail trips most people up and leaves the job half done: the two settings work as a pair. Leave the first one on "Everyone" and the second one changes nothing.

Open WhatsApp and tap the three dots in the top-right corner.

What the options actually mean

Everyone — anyone who has your number sees your status, including people outside your contacts.
My Contacts — only people saved in your phone book.
My Contacts Except… — a useful middle ground: the list stays open while specific people are excluded.
Nobody — the status is hidden from everyone.

The "when I'm online" option is simpler: either Everyone or Same as last seen. Hiding just the online indicator while keeping last seen public isn't possible — WhatsApp doesn't offer that combination.

What you give up in exchange

Reciprocity is the rule here: hide your own last seen and you stop seeing everyone else's. The same applies to the online indicator — it disappears for you too.

The logic is straightforward: the app won't let you watch others while staying invisible yourself. If seeing when a particular person was last active matters to you, you'll have to keep your own status open — or use "My Contacts Except…" and hide only from specific people.

What you can't hide

Even with the status closed, some signs of activity remain visible:

The "typing…" indicator. There's no way to switch it off; WhatsApp has no such setting. It appears whenever you type in an open chat.
Delivery ticks. Two grey ticks mean the message reached your device — an indirect sign that your phone is connected.
Played voice notes. WhatsApp marks a voice message as played even with read receipts turned off.
Status updates. If you post to Status, the viewer list and posting time are visible independently of your online settings.
Group chats. Read receipts always work in groups, whether or not you disabled blue ticks.

Blue ticks are a separate setting

Read receipts have nothing to do with the online status, but people usually want to switch them off in the same visit: Settings → Privacy → Read receipts.

The reciprocity rule applies here as well — turn off blue ticks and you stop seeing them from others. And in group chats receipts stay on regardless.

Web and desktop

An open WhatsApp Web tab or a running desktop app makes you appear online exactly as your phone does. Closing the tab doesn't always take you offline either — the session stays active.

To be sure you're not showing up as online from a computer, end the session: Settings → Linked devices, then log out of the one you don't need. Privacy settings are unaffected and carry across all linked devices automatically.

Reading a message without appearing online

The notification shade. A short message is fully readable there without opening the chat.
Airplane mode. Switch it on, read the conversation, close the app, and only then restore the connection. Works for messages already downloaded.
Widgets and smartwatches. They show incoming messages without opening the chat on your phone.

All three are about read receipts and status, not invisibility in general: delivery is registered either way.

Common mistakes

Setting only one of the two options. With last seen on "Everyone", the online label keeps showing.
Expecting full invisibility. The typing indicator and delivery ticks stay.
Installing third-party "online trackers". They violate WhatsApp's rules and lead to number bans, and they collect exactly the data anyone can see when a status is left public.
Using blocking to hide. Blocking does hide your status from one person, but it cuts off the conversation entirely — usually overkill.
A forgotten session on someone else's computer. It keeps you online without your involvement — check the linked devices list.

If the status won't hide

Update the app: the separate online-visibility control arrived later and is missing in older versions.
Check that the change was saved — the setting sometimes fails to apply without a stable connection.
Make sure you're looking at the right account and not a WhatsApp Business app installed alongside it: that one has its own settings.
Your contact may still see the old value until their chat refreshes — ask them to reopen the conversation.
