How to Close Off Your Phone Number in Telegram

It takes two settings, not one: Settings → Privacy and Security → Phone Number. Under "Who can see my phone number" choose Nobody, and under "Who can find me by my number" choose My Contacts. The first removes the number from your profile; the second closes you off from strangers who simply happen to have it.

Configure only the first and people can still find you by your phone — which is usually the exact thing users are trying to prevent.

Step by step

Android

Open the side menu (three lines) → Settings.
Go to Privacy and Security.
Select Phone Number.
Set both values: number visibility and the lookup rule.

Open the Settings tab at the bottom of the screen.

Two settings and the difference between them

"Who can see my phone number" governs whether the number appears in your profile. The options are Everybody, My Contacts and Nobody. It's what someone sees when they open your card.

"Who can find me by my number" works differently: it decides whether someone who saves your phone in their address book will find your profile. Only Everybody and My Contacts are available here — the option can't be switched off entirely.

The distinction matters. The first setting hides the number; the second hides you. Which is why both need closing.

Exceptions: fine-grained control

Under each option sit the Always share with and Never share with lists. They override the main rule for specific people:

To close off from one person while leaving everything else as it is — add them to Never share with.
To hide the number from everyone but a few — set Nobody and add those people to Always share with.

These lists don't clear themselves, so it's worth reviewing them every few months — old exceptions keep working.

Who will still see your number

The settings don't deliver full anonymity. Your number stays visible to:

People who already have it saved in their phone book. Telegram can't take back what someone already has — they'll see you as an ordinary contact.
Anyone you sent your contact card to. Forwarding a contact passes the number along in full.
Bots and services where you tapped "Share phone number". The button looks harmless but hands over your phone in one tap.
Telegram itself. The number remains your account identifier; it's hidden only from other users.

Group and channel members, on the other hand, don't see it: the member list shows a name, photo and username.

A username instead of a number

A hidden number raises the obvious question: how do people reach you? Through a username. It's set in your main profile settings and works as a public address: someone finds you by searching @username or follows a t.me/username link without knowing your phone.

A few practical points:

the username is public and visible to everyone — don't put personal details in it;
it can be changed, and the old one is released for others to claim;
a t.me link works well on business cards, in email signatures and on social profiles — it replaces the number in any public context.

Worth closing at the same time

It makes sense to go through the whole privacy section in one pass:

Profile photo — limit it to contacts if you'd rather strangers didn't see your avatar.
Last seen and online — hides your status and last visit time.
Group invites — stops you being added to random chats without consent.
Calls — narrows who can ring you.
Forwarded messages — prevents a link to your profile being attached when your messages are quoted.

When the number is closed for work reasons

Public communication — sales, support, intake — is its own case. Hiding the number isn't enough there, because the personal profile still serves as the entry point for strangers, and with them come spam and calls outside working hours.

It's more practical to split communication across profiles: the personal one stays closed and reserved for people you know, while the work one handles clients with its own username and its own privacy settings. Such a profile is set up on a second SIM, an anonymous number, or on ready-made Telegram accounts when it's meant for one specific line of work. Privacy settings are configured per account — they don't carry over on their own.

Changing your number, and the anonymous +888

If the number has already spread through other people's address books, settings won't pull it back — everyone who has it will keep seeing you. Two routes remain.

Change the number. Settings → Change Phone Number. The account, conversations and subscriptions all survive; only the binding moves to the new phone.
Use an anonymous +888 number. These are sold on Fragment, officially supported by Telegram, and tied to no carrier. They work only inside the messenger, and access depends on a crypto wallet — lose the wallet and you lose the number.

Common mistakes

Setting only the visibility option. Number lookup stays open and people keep finding you.
Expecting the number to vanish for everyone. Those who have it saved will still see it — that's not a bug.
No username. Closing the number with no alternative makes it harder for people who genuinely need to reach you.
Tapping "Share phone number" in bots. One tap undoes all your settings.
Forgotten exceptions. An Always share list built long ago keeps showing the number to those people.
