Can You Hide Your Following List on Instagram?

There's no "hide following" setting in the app — not in current versions, at least. The only way to close the list off to outsiders is to make the account private. Then your following, your followers and your posts are visible only to people you've approved.

If flipping the profile isn't an option, targeted measures remain: restrict or block specific users, remove unwanted followers, and move personal interests to a separate account. Here's each route and what it costs.

What other people see by default

On an open profile, everything below is available to anyone, including people without an account:

the full following and followers lists;
the counts for both;
posts, Reels and highlights;
tags on other people's photos, unless you've hidden them.

What is never visible: your profile visits, your search history, and accounts you simply read without following.

A private account is the only complete solution

Open your profile and go to the menu (three lines) → Settings and privacy.
Find the Account privacy section.
Turn on Private account and confirm.

What changes:

the following and followers lists become visible only to your followers;
new users can only follow you with your approval;
posts disappear from public surfaces and recommendations;
the counts stay visible — it's the lists that get hidden, not the numbers;
current followers keep access to everything they could see before.

That last point is the unpleasant surprise: going private doesn't cut off people who already follow you. If the goal is hiding from specific individuals, they have to be removed separately.

Hiding your following from one particular person

When closing the whole profile isn't an option, the targeted tools do the work.

Remove them as a follower

Open your followers list, find the account and choose remove. They get no notification, and on a private profile they lose access to your lists and posts. On an open account this barely helps — they can simply visit the page and see everything.

Restrict

Restrict hides that person's comments from others and moves their messages out of your main inbox, but it doesn't close your following list. It's a tool against persistent commenters, not a privacy measure.

Block

The bluntest option, and the only one that fully closes your profile to a specific user regardless of account status. They stop seeing your page, your following list and your posts — and you stop seeing theirs.

Reading content without following

The real goal is often phrased differently: not "hide my following list" but "don't show who I follow". Several workarounds cover that.

Mute instead of unfollowing. When a follow is a social obligation but the content isn't interesting, hide their posts and stories — the follow stays, your feed clears up.
Saved posts instead of following. Open accounts can be read without following, and the posts you want go into collections.
A separate profile for personal interests. The cleanest option when your main account is public or work-related: its follows have no connection to the main profile.

That last approach has long been standard among people running a profile professionally — personal follows, test accounts and the work page stay separate and never overlap in the audience's view. It usually means registering a new profile on a separate email, or using already registered Instagram accounts when a profile with history beats a blank new page. Either way, attach your own email, set a password and turn on two-factor authentication right at the start.

Worth hiding while you're in there

Like counts. Settings has a dedicated option for the display of likes and shares — you can turn it off for your own posts.
Activity status. Switched off in the privacy section; it works both ways, so you stop seeing others' activity too.
Photo tags. Manual approval keeps other people's posts from appearing on your profile automatically.
Close Friends stories. The Close Friends list lets you post to a narrow circle without going private.
Hiding stories from specific people. A separate setting in the story section — useful when blocking feels excessive.

What can't be hidden

Following and follower counts. Always displayed, private account included.
Individual follows within the list. Hiding one account while leaving the rest visible isn't possible — only unfollowing is.
The follow itself, from the account you follow. The page owner always sees you among their followers and gets a notification.
A story you've already viewed. The viewer list is visible to its author regardless of your settings.

Common mistakes

Relying on third-party apps. Services promising to hide your following ask for your login and password and end in a lost account. A feature Instagram doesn't have doesn't appear in a third-party tool either.
Going private without cleaning up followers. Everyone already following continues to see everything.
Confusing Restrict with blocking. The first doesn't hide your profile; the second hides it completely.
Mass unfollowing. Dropping hundreds of follows in a short window reads as automated activity and leads to temporary limits.
Expecting anonymity. Even with a private profile, your handle, avatar and bio stay public.

Will someone know I removed them as a follower?

There's no notification. They may notice on their own if they visit your page and see a Follow button instead of "Following".
